The Founding Vision and the Montessori Philosophy

Huguette Erato-Halley founded St. Maarten Montessori School driven by a deep passion for fostering a love of learning and providing an environment that nurtures the individual potential of every child. As a mother and educator, Huguette saw the need for a school that went beyond academic achievement, one that emphasized emotional, social, and personal development alongside intellectual growth.

Her inspiration came from the Montessori philosophy, founded by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator. Dr. Montessori’s approach revolutionized education by emphasizing hands-on learning, independence, and respect for the child’s natural development. She believed that children learn best when they are given the freedom to explore and discover at their own pace, within a carefully prepared environment. Montessori’s vision of education centered on the idea that every child has a unique potential that can be nurtured when guided with care and understanding.

Drawing on these principles, Huguette set out to create St. Maarten Montessori School—a place where children could engage with the world around them in meaningful ways, developing not only academically but also emotionally, socially, and morally. Under her leadership, the school reflects the core values of the Montessori method: respect, responsibility, independence, and a deep love of learning. Huguette’s vision continues to guide the school today, creating a nurturing and stimulating environment where each child is empowered to reach their fullest potential.
